Transition to UX Design - Malin's Story

Name Malin Kalfjäll

Background Business owner in the beauty industry

Current UX/UI Designer at Sweco

Graduation October 2022

LinkedIn

Malin had a successful business in the beauty industry for 10 years when she decided to change careers. She wanted to combine her problem-solving and customer service experience with tech and creativity. One day, she got a sign. After taking the code challenge with Tjejer Kodar, she received an email from Technigo with information about their new boot camp; a new UX Design Boot Camp. She jumped on the UX train ride and has not regretted it.

Team Zebras

Malin attended the boot camp while on her second maternity leave and thought it was hard but fun to juggle them both. She loved the fact that it was flexible hours so she could choose when to study, but also attend class when she had the time. In April 2022, Malin started the boot camp and it opened the doors to a whole new world.

“I got to know so many great people and I’m thankful for my team, Team Zebras. Working closely with your team was really helpful during the fast-paced boot camp and we had a lot of fun together.”

Malin's team made a playlist on Spotify, where they added songs to cheer each other and celebrate sprints. So now they can listen to it and remember the experience they had together.

Learn about sustainability

When deciding on what to do for their final project, Malin and her teammate Ida decided, like many others in the class, to focus on sustainability. “It is a very important subject right now, so it was an easy choice to make,” said Malin.

Malin and Ida designed an education app where you can learn about sustainability in a fun way. You can read articles, watch videos or listen to podcasts, all to help you live and learn about sustainability. “People know that they need to do something but don’t know how, and that’s what this app will teach them,” Malin says.

Learn new things every day

Malin just landed and started her first job and is grateful for the fact that it’s Sweco. “I love that they care about sustainability and what impact they make in the world. It’s a big company and if they show the way, maybe more will follow. I feel very welcomed, and they care about the employees,” Malin stated.

Malin is currently working on a project where she uses her new skills in wireframing and prototyping to find the perfect solution for her client. “We had to iterate several times to find the right solution for their users, it’s fun and I learn new things from my co-workers every day.” Malin found her job on LinkedIn. She applied for an internship as a front-end developer because she had little knowledge of coding and thought it could be a good start. Little did she know that 24 hours after the interview, they wanted to hire her as a UX/UI designer. “It was a real shock when they called and said they had a job for me. I started the week after.”

Malin also attended the Career Coaching Program and felt it was very helpful on her journey to her first job in tech. During the program, everyone had a mentor in the industry and Malin had Sofia, who is working as a UX Designer at Usify. “She has been the greatest support in my job search and also in my role as UX Designer. I see our relationship continuing for a long time.”
